DETROIT (WWJ) - A distraught family is asking for help locating their 10-month-old puppy stolen from their car while visiting Detroit.

On Friday, the Grand Rapids family dropped their daughter off at a concert downtown and decided to get a bite to eat around 8 p.m. while they waited for the concert to end-- leaving their dog, Coco, in the car.

Upon their return, the car's lock was punctured and Coco was gone. The car was parked in the area of Watson and Woodward Avenue.

Alvin and Olga Smelik say the Yorkie-Chihuahua mix is about 5-6 pounds and just turned 10 months old. The family says they are devastated and are pleading with the person who did this to return her. They say it was a rainy, cool night and didn't think leaving her in the car would be an issue.

The purebred Yorkie is unusual because she has a long, undocked tail. She was wearing a red harness-like collar. The family is now appealing to the public for their pet's return. "She's the sweetest thing ever and our hearts are broken."

If you have information about Coco you can text the Smelik's at 616-821-0752.
