Gender Reveal Party Turns Tragic After Explosion Leaves Woman Dead

An Iowa woman is dead after tragedy struck at a gender reveal party.

The woman died after an explosion at a gender reveal party created debris that hit her.

KCCI in Des Moines, Iowa reported that the Marion County Sheriff’s office said the explosion happened at a home in central Iowa.

The sheriff’s office said it happened on Saturday around 4:00 p.m. during a party that would announce the gender of the baby that an area couple is expecting.

Deputies arrived at a home in Knoxville, Iowa and found a 56-year-old woman dead. The city of Knoxville is about 40 miles southeast of Des Moines.

Investigators on scene determined the explosion during the announcement killed the woman. Police said in a statement that the blast “caused a flying piece of debris to strike the victim."

No details about the explosion were available. The sheriff’s office told the media additional updates will be provided on Monday. The victim’s name in this tragedy was not immediately released.

A retired pastor told KCCI-TV, “It’s something that’s supposed to be fun and exciting.”

“You have your family there and then, wow, everything changed in an instant.” he added.

People in the area told the news station that their hearts hurt for the family and their loss. Neighbors said in the small town, everyone feels connected.
