DETROIT (WWJ) - Efforts to repair roads in the Upper Peninsula after extreme rain are underway with 63 members of the Michigan National Guard deployed to the area.

The National Guard members will step in as damage assessment continues.

"Our next steps based on those dollar figures is we'll work with FEMA in confirming those dollar figures - to see --if we meet those thresholds for a presidential declaration of disaster - that would turn into some federal money if we can state our case," says Chris Bush, commander of the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division for the Michigan State Police.

Michigan's members of Congress are standing behind the state in any financial request it makes to Washington.

"They've been great ... everyone's goal here has been to help our citizens in these communities to get back on their feet," says Bush.
