Royal Oak Residents To Vote On Citywide Bus System

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - The bus will be on the ballot in Royal Oak this fall.

City Commissioners on Tuesday approved a ballot measure for their own bus system, which would consist of two routes in the city, an extended and improved route to the Detroit Zoo and twice the funding for senior curb-to-curb and community transit. Additional service would be provided for special events such as Arts Beats and Eats, and the city would contract with SMART to manage the 14-bus fleet.

Voters will decide November 6th on a 1.25-mil increase over five years to fund the proposed transit system -- costing the average homeowner roughly $125 a year. If approved, the Royal Oak Go, or ROGO Transit system, would hit the streets next summer.

A recent survey of 1,000 residents found 66 percent were in favor of the measure.
