DETROIT (WWJ) -- "They call it 'Royale with Cheese.'"

You may remember that famous line from the popular 90's movie "Pulp Fiction." It's also the name of a burger joint in Midtown Detroit that just celebrated its one-year anniversary.

When you walk into Royale With Cheese on Cass Avenue, you can hear the 90's music playing over the speaker, and on the wall, there's a huge mural of the scene with John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson talking about royale with cheese. The restaurant's latest Cuban fried chicken sandwich is named the "Marsellus Wallace."

Chef Hass Bazzy says he and his partner, pharmacist Moe Ettaher, decided to make their restaurant "Pulp Fiction"-themed, because they are big fans of the movie.

"Growing up in West Africa, even in Lebanon, we called a pound "royale." And we do different cheese fondues here, not your typical burger joint where you just melt cheese or use nacho cheese out of a can. We actually make our own fondue in house," Bazzy told WWJ Newsradio 950's Zahra Huber. "It just made sense, we're serving quarter pounders with cheese. So 'Royale With Cheese.' That's why we tied in 'Pulp Fiction'."

Bazzy said Midtown just seemed like the perfect spot for their restaurant.

"I used to work for the (Detroit) Tigers as a chef there," Bazzy said. "Driving up and down I see the growth of it, especially when I went to Wayne State for a little bit. And just seeing the Cass Corridor make a huge leap and change and I was like 'I want to be part of this.' I see all the business come to Detroit, I mean it just made so much sense."

A big part of the business for Bazzy and Ettaher is giving back to the community.

"I love that we're hiring locals to work here," Bazzy said. "We hired a couple guys off the streets and gave them an opportunity. The more you keep them busy, the less trouble they get into."

Keeping things local is important to Bazzy and his restaurant. From shopping local to helping local businesses, Bazzi said "I think local everything."

"I think this is what made Detroit what it is right now," he said.

Ninety percent of the products at Royale With Cheese come from Eastern Market. The restaurant also works with a local pastry chef to make their breads.

Bazzy says they hope to grow their brand and open a second location while maintaining their consistency.
