GIBRALTAR (WWJ) - Rescue teams are continuing to search for a woman who presumably drowned while swimming in the Detroit River.

Officials say the woman was boating with friends Wednesday evening along the Trenton Channel, between Trenton and Grosse Ile, when she jumped overboard to take a swim. Her friends told police that she was swept away by strong currents near Calf Island, between Gibraltar and Grosse Isle, and disappeared under the water.

Crews spent the night searching for the woman, said to be in her 40s, but called off efforts around 11 p.m. The search resumed around 7 a.m. Thursday and will continue through the day, weather permitting.

The woman's name was not released.
