PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A semi-truck hauling steel lost control along a metro Detroit freeway and fell onto the roadway below, bursting into flames.

The accident happened around 4:40 a.m. Thursday along southbound I-275 when the truck left the roadway near Ann Arbor Trail, rolled down the embankment, landed on westbound Schoolcraft Road and caught fire.

The driver managed to escape the burning truck, which was upside down and mangled with debris strewn on both sides of Schoolcraft. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation and possible minor injuries.

Firefighters responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the flames. HAZMAT crews were on the scene to contain roughly 100 gallons of fuel on the truck.

"We do have a concern currently, the fire is out but we do have a concern for the diesel from the tanks that possibly entered the waterway next to the road. So, we're working on that now with the Western Wayne HAZMAT Team," Fire Capt. David Fox told WWJ's Charlie Langton.

Traffic Tipster Mark drove by the scene shortly after the crash.

"It looked like the semi truck drove under the overpass and exploded. I saw smoke coming out from under the overpass. And there was a bunch of people running down there to check on him and see if he was ok," Mark said.

Michigan State Police are now conducting an investigation.
