Sewage Spill Causing Major Backup On Southfield Road

ALLEN PARK (WWJ) - A stinky situation is causing major traffic backups in Allen Park -- and it could be hours before the mess is cleaned up.

Officials say a truck hauling sewer debris apparently lost part of its load on northbound Southfiled Road between Allen Road and I-94 early Wednesday morning. It's just before the road turns into Southfield Freeway.

"About 5 o'clock this morning a call came in for a car spinning out on the roadway. We came out and there's some kind of sludge on the roadway," Allen Park Firefighter Richard Hamilton told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "We've got HAZMAT out here, MDOT and Wayne County Roads as well."

Officials had to close two lanes, leaving just one open, so hazardous materials crews can clean up the spill. Officials with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality are on the scene overseeing the cleanup work, which is expected to take several hours.

At this point, officials aren't exactly sure what the substance is. Drivers passing by the scene tell WWJ the smell in the air is horrendous.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area. Traffic is backed up to Dix Highway.
