BENONA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) - A 64-year-old man has died, according to authorities, in a farming accident in western Michigan.

The Oceana County Sheriff's Office said Gary Mills of Grand Rapids was killed Monday evening as he was working on a family member's farm in Benona Township.

Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast said Mills was operating the “older Oliver tractor” when the vehicle overturned and crushed him.

"It appeared he was attempting to expand a power take-off shaft on a mower and had chained it to a tree and to the tractor in an attempt to pull it open," Mast explained, in a news release. "During this, the tractor flipped over and immediately killed the gentleman operating it.”

Michigan State Police, the Shelby-Benona Fire Department and others responded to the scene, in the 4600 block of South 44th Avenue, but could not save Mills.

Benona Township is located west of Big Rapids and north of Muskegon.
