SMART Bus Collides With Street Sweeper, 4 Hospitalized

June 07, 2018 - 10:14 am

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Four people have been taken to the hospital after a SMART bus crashed into a street sweeper in Macomb County.

The accident happened Thursday morning on eastbound 23 Mile Road near Baker, just east of I-94 in Chesterfield Township. Police Chief Bradley Kersten said the bus rear ended a street sweeper that was working alongside the right side of the road.

"It doesn't appear he (street sweeper) was in a lane of travel. Obviously, we'll take a look at the emergency lights, his caution lighting that was in use at the time," Kersten told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

The bus driver, who had to be rescued from the vehicle, and two passengers along with the driver of the street sweeper were hurt. Authorities say the injuries are serious but don't appear to be life-threatening.

Other circumstances surrounding the crash, including who may have been at fault, weren't immediately clear.

"Who, what, why and how, that's going to take some time to sort out," Kersten said.

A section of 23 Mile Road was closed for several hours as police were investigating the scene, but has since reopened to traffic.
