DETROIT (WWJ) - A serial killer and rapist, believed to be targeting prostitutes on Detroit's east side, may be one step closer to being identified.

That's according to Imhotep Blue of Detroit 300, speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950's Vickie Thomas Friday.

He said members of his community group has been hitting the streets at night, talking to sex workers and collecting tips that could lead to the arrest of the man wanted for at least three murders

"We've actually talked to some of the children of the night," Blue said, "and they have information that we've already forwarded to the police that they probably have not let out to the public yet."

This includes, Blue said, a partial license plate number.

"Most of the people who actually work the streets, whether they're on one side of the fence or the other side, they know who this person is; they have a pretty good idea of who this person is," he said. "And, according to the reports we've got, he's been active in the last three weeks."

"We have an M.O. on the way he does it, we have a vehicle, there's multiple vehicles," he added. "So this is information, again, that probably nobody else has heard yet."

Blue hopes to hook up potential living witnesses with police.

"What we will be doing is going back to an individual that says she was victimized by him in the last three weeks, and we're going to make contact with her today," he said. "...She survived. We also have another person that's had contact with him that is actually willing to come to the police station and actually give a composite."

"They're glad that somebody's now listening to them."

According to Detroit Police Jamces Craig, three female victims -- one found last week, one in May and one in March -- are all believed to have been lured by the same suspect into abandoned homes to their deaths.

One, Craig said, was killed by blunt force trauma. While autopsy results for the other two are pending, Craig said the cases appear to be linked.

As the investigation continues, 40 Detroit police officers are going door-to-door, searching every open vacant house on the east side, looking for additional victims.

Anyone with information should call Detroit Police Homicide at 313-596-2260 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 1-800-SPEAK-UP (1-800-773-2587).
