Southfield Police Identify Young Women Killed In Suspected Drunken Driving Crash

SOTUFHEILD (WWJ) - Southfield police have released the names of two young women killed in rollover crash, allegedly caused by a drunken driver.

Police said Wednesday that 21-year-old Marcia Gingles and 20-year-old Tyana Bryant, both Southfield residents, were passengers in car that missed a turn off the Northwestern Highway Service Drive onto Berg Road on Tuesday, struck a tree and overturned. Both women were taken to by EMS to local hospitals were they died of their injuries. 

The driver -- identified as a 20-year-old Southfield man -- tried to run from the crash site but was caught a short time later and arrested. 

Police, who told reporters they believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash, gave the driver breathalyzer test at the scene before he was transported to the hospital for a blood draw to determine his BAC.  Speed may have also contributed, investigators said, noting that the posted limit around the curve at Berg Rd. in 30 mph.

The man, whose name is being held pending formal charges, is due in 46th District Court for an arraignment Thursday at which time more information is expected to be released.
