State Considers Renaming Lodge Freeway After Aretha Franklin

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Lodge Freeway could get a new name in honor of the late Aretha Franklin.

The Michigan House Transportation Committee is set to consider a bill that would rename a portion of M-10 from 8 Mile to I-94 as the Aretha Franklin Memorial Highway.

Rep. Fred Durhal III, who introduced the bill last session, said the location of the memorial freeway is significant.

"The Lodge and the highway is something that just would memorialize her for a very, very long time. This kind of goes through her stomping grounds, if you will, close to her father's church," Durhal told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "Unlike streets, it would show that the state -- not just the city in particular -- wants to pay tribute to her."

Durhal said the legislation was partially inspired by Franklin's smash hit, "Freeway of Love."

"The song definitely coincides with that," he said. "I think it's something that the citizens of the state of Michigan want, just to show how much we cared about her and to pay tribute to her accomplishments and what she's done for us."

A portion of Madison Street is currently named for Franklin, who died last year at age 76.
