State Police: Michigan Man Attacked Neighbor With Hot Fire Poker

GREEN LAKE TWP. (WWJ) - A 30-year-old man is behind bars in northern Michigan, accused of attacking his neighbor with a hot fire poker.

Michigan State Police say 30-year-old Nicholas Matthew of Interlochen was arrested at his home the night of Monday, December 31, after troopers with the Cadillac Post responded to an assault complaint 

The alleged victim, a 29-year-old woman, told investigators that Matthew had attacked her with a hot fire poker at her home on Karlin Road in Green Lake Township, at around 5 p.m. A friend of the victim witnessed the assault and intervened, but the victim had already sustained burns to her extremities, according to a news release.

Police said the woman declined medical treatment for her injuries.

The weapon was seized by troopers as Matthew was taken into custody and lodged at the Grand Traverse County Jail. 

He was arraigned via in 86th District Court in Traverse City on Thursday on one felony count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, which carries a penalty of up to four years in prison.

It's unclear what prompted the attack as further details were not immediately released.
