State Police: Suspected Drunk Driver Hit MDOT Worker On I-96

May 09, 2019 - 3:18 pm

LYON TWP. (WWJ) - A Michigan Department of Transportation worker was hospitalized with serious injuries following a crash along I-96 Wednesday night.

It happened at around 10 p.m, according to Michigan State Police, as the worker was installing a sign on  the westbound side of the freeway near Milford Road in Lyon Township.

Police said the man was on the back of an MDOT vehicle, parked on the right shoulder of the freeway, when the vehicle was hit by a car.

Police said "at fault driver," identified at this time only as a 34-year-old man, is suspected of driving under the influence. He consented to a blood draw and was taken to the Novi Police Department lockup to await expected charges.

Michiganders should note that the state's expanded "Move Over Law" -- requiring drivers to slow to 10 mph below the posted speed limit; and, if possible, move over a lane when passing certain vehicles on the side of the road -- would apply in this case.

An investigation by the MSP Metro North Post is ongoing.
