Teen Arrested In Sexual Assault Of Toddler At Redford Township Park

April 18, 2019 - 5:35 pm

REDFORD (WWJ) - A teenager has been arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a 3-year-old boy at a Wayne County park.

According to Redford Township Police Captain Al DiPrima, a witness called police to report something suspicious was going on under a bridge at Lola Park, in the area of 5 Mile and Telegraph Rd. in Redford.

Officers arrived on the scene to find an empty stroller, DiPrima said, before catching the 17-year-old suspect in the act of molesting the child.

The teen is said to have some "developmental issues," according to DiPrima; but nonetheless he remains in custody on an expected charge of criminal sexual conduct.

DiPrima told WWJ's Sandra McNeill that the suspect and the victim were known to each other in some way, although it's not yet clear if they are related. The victim, he added, did not suffer any physical injuries and is in the care of family.

The teen has not yet appeared in court. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said, late Thursday afternoon, that it was still reviewing the case and that a charging decision and arraignment were not expected until next week.

The suspect's name has not been released.
