Thick Smoke Billows From Massive Westland Apartment Fire

"It's going to be a total loss here"

May 09, 2018 - 7:42 pm

WESTLAND (WWJ) - There was a lot of smoke, but no serious injuries reported as a vicious fire destroyed a Westland apartment complex.

The fire broke out early Wednesday evening, according to authorities, at the Westwood Village Apartments in the area of Joy Road and Newburgh, south of Ann Arbor Trail.

Fire officials said two buildings were involved, and all residents have been accounted for. As of 7:30 p.m., the fire was still "very active," as crews from several departments worked together to try to put it out.

"The fire has penetrated the roof. The roof has collapsed, and that's exactly what I'm looking at now,"  Assistant Fire Chief Kelly Eggers said. "Each building contains 12 units, and it's going to be a total loss here."

Eggers said all smoke detectors were working at the time.

Tipster Bob from Livonia was in the area and called WWJ to describe the scene.

"Smoke was permeating the housing, the subdivision across the street from the apartment complex. Right now I'm walking through a thick haze of smoke," he said. Now they're putting an aerial ladder up over one of the apartments; it's in the back of the complex. Inkster (firefighters) just pulled up."

The Red Cross has been called to the scene to assist residents displaced by the fire.

There is no word on a possible cause as an investigation continues.
