(WWJ) A line of severe thunderstorms did some damage in metro Detroit while making its way across Michigan, leaving 33,000 DTE Energy customers in the dark Monday night.

Frequent lightning and very heavy rain were noted with the storm, according to forecasters, along with strong wind gusts up to 60 mph Monday afternoon. Large hail was also possible, forecasters said.

DTE says the number of outages had been reduced from 40,000 earlier in the day.

One of the bigger outages is near U-S 23 and M-59 in Hartland where about 3,5000 and businesses lost power. Other outages reported Monday afternoon were near Howell and Fowlerville.

DTE officials say crews are working throughout the night, hoping to restore power to all those affected by the end of the day Tuesday.

Drivers were urged to be alert to ponding on roadways, and those attending outdoor events is advised to seek shelter.
