WWJ -- Thousands of DTE Energy customers were left in the dark Monday night after a round of thunderstorms moved across metro Detroit.

DTE says at least 8,000 homes and businesses were without power as of 9 p.m., with multiple outages scattered across the area.

The National Weather Service had issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of western Wayne County and in central Wayne County, authorities reported winds as high as 40 mph, with pea sized hail and heavy rain.

The hardest hit area appeared to be in Belleville near the border of Romulus, west of Detroit Metro Airport. The DTE outage map showed more than 3,600 customers south of I-94 near Haggerty Road were in the dark, as of 9:30 p.m. DTE said the cause of that outage was still under investigation. Power was expected to be restored by 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Another heavily impacted area was on the border of Clarkston and Springfield Township, near I-75 and Clark Road in northern Oakland County. DTE initially reported around 2,000 customers in that area were affected, but as of 9:30, the outage map reported around 560 were still without power in that area. The reported cause of that outage was a lightning strike and the issue was expected to be corrected by 10:30 p.m.

More than 1,000 customers were impacted by an outage in Troy, near 18 Mile and Dequindre Roads. DTE said the cause of that outage was still under investigation and they hoped to restore power by midnight.

The storms appeared to be done for the night, but more rain is possible on Tuesday.

Traffic was affected by the storms in several areas across southeast Michigan, including flooding on the Southfield Freeway between Michigan Avenue and Rotunda.
