DETROIT (WWJ) -- Parents and kids are getting ready for the summer, and that means looking for ways to prevent the summer slide.

The YMCA is here to help, with 12 different day camp locations in southeast Michigan, as well as a pair of overnight camps in the state.

Latisha McCree, Chief Development Officer for the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, says the camps are more than just making sure your kids have a place to go during the summer months -- they help them learn and stay engaged while away from school.

"When students are engaged in camps, and the research shows this, they have a more likelihood to not only be ready to learn, but maybe even at a higher level," McCree told WWJ's Brooke Allen. "Because they’ve been engaged, they’re using their critical thinking skills, problem solving skills. We have STEM programs integrated into our day camp programs, as well as a lot of interactive, hands-on learning opportunities."

The day camps -- located in 12 different cities across southeast Michigan -- all offer different themes each week, ranging from trying a variety of new sports at Carls YMCA in Milford, to acting in Livonia, or even cooking in Birmingham, plus a whole lot more.

McCree says one of the coolest camps they offer in the area is operated by the Boll YMCA downtown Detroit, but the campers get to spend the entire camp on Belle Isle in the Detroit River.

"It is amazing. They get to take advantage of the amenities on the island. It is a fabulous camp," McCree said.

Each camper gets to spend the entire day outside, while getting the chance to swim in the river, explore nature paths, play games and much more, all while making new friends.

Many of the day camps offer open houses to see if the camp is right for your kids.

Looking to send the kids away for an entire week? The YMCA offers two week-long overnight camps.

Camp Ohiyesa in Holly offers a different theme for each week, ranging from pirates, to Star Wars, to a "battle of the bands."

Camp Nissokone in Oscoda offers horseback riding, canoeing and even a special sailing camp.
