(WWJ) -- A man was ejected from his vehicle and killed after getting a flat tire on I-275 in Canton Friday morning.

Newsradio 950's Murray Feldman reports that such fatal accidents are more common than many people may think.

In 2015 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that tire blowouts cause more than 400 deaths and over 78,000 crashes every year. Experts say late spring and summer is what you might call "blowout season."

Outside temperatures are hotter, cars are traveling more and many are loaded with extra weight, especially if the car is loaded with vacationers. All of this added stress on tires can lead to accidents.

Popular Mechanics has reported all of that can push a neglected or injured tire beyond the breaking point. And they also say potholes will sometimes cut all the way through the fabric and rubber and the tire will go immediately.

Experts say your best move is to always examine your tires. Especially before a long trip; make sure they’re inflated properly and look for any blemishes that could be the start of a problem.
