Tornadoes, Hail And Thunderstorms Reported As Storm Strikes Southeast Michigan

March 14, 2019 - 5:10 pm

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Michigan is in clean-up mode after a fast-moving storm made its way across southeast Michigan Thursday, bringing heavy rain, wind and several reports of tornadoes.

The NWS Detroit issued several tornado warnings in various areas, including northwestern Washtenaw County and near Flint, where the heaviest damage appears to have occurred.

A confirmed tornado caused damage to at least 21 homes near Durand and Vernon Township, located between Lansing and Flint. The tornado was spotted around 7 p.m. Thursday.

Video posted to Twitter by Joey Stinson shows his roof completely ripped off.

Thousands of residents were without power in that area, with Consumers Energy reporting at least 6,000 customers were in the dark as of 11 p.m. Meanwhile, DTE Energy reported a little over 1,000 customers were without power in the areas closer to Detroit.

WWJ's Jason Scott spoke with Jim Lange of the Michigan State Police Tri-Cities Post:

Tornadoes were also spotted in Flushing in Genesee County.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remained in effect for much of Oakland County until 9 p.m., bringing heavy rains and hail in some areas.

In Lenawee County, near Adrian, trained spotters for the National Weather Service reported hail one inch in diameter at around 5 p.m., as the storm was moving northeast at around 80 mph.

Tipster Phil Thomasin was New Hudson, in the area near Grand River and Milford Rd., as the storm moved through that area.

"It's like dark-dark; clouds are low," he told WWJ's Sandra McNeill. "(There's) dime-size hail...and like, big lightening and thunder."

Forecasters said early Thursday afternoon the storm would carry the biggest risk until around 7 p.m., with wind gusts up to 60 mph expected and a "low probability" for a brief, weak tornado in Southeast Michigan.
