Traffic Alert: 2 Major Freeway Closures In Metro Detroit This Weekend

August 09, 2019 - 3:16 pm

(WWJ) Drivers should plan ahead for construction delays, with a pair of freeway closures coming Friday night through the weekend.

Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, all eastbound lanes of I-696 will be closed from I-75 to Gratiot Ave. M-3) in Macomb County.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the closure is required to allow crews to complete sewer work that requires large equipment across all lanes of the freeway. Specifically, crews will be repairing sewer pipes to ensure drainage from the roadway.

There will be a local lane from I-75 to Dequindre Road only; and eastbound I-696 will have one lane open from I-94 to Dequindre Road. The detour for eastbound I-696 will be  southbound I-75 to eastbound M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-94.

Meanwhile, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, I-94 westbound in Detroit will close completely from I-75 to I-96 for bridge work and pavement repair. During this closure, westbound traffic will be detoured via southbound I-75 to westbound I-96, back to westbound I-94.

MDOT closure is needed to safely allow crews to resurface westbound I-94 from Second Avenue to I-96 and to set bridge beams over the westbound lanes at the Brush Street overpass.

Both freeways should reopen by 5 Monday morning.

Drivers should take not that eastbound I-94 will remain open this weekend; however, crews will close the right and center lanes during the overnight hours from US-12 (Michigan Ave.) to Second Ave. in order to safely pave freeway ramps. The overnight lane closures begin nightly at 9 p.m. and end by 5 a.m. the following mornings, and are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 7 and Thursday, Aug. 8.

All of this work his weather-permitting.

Both freeways are expected to reopen by 3 a.m. Monday.
