Traffic Alert: Major Construction Projects On I-75, I-94 Start Next Month

February 16, 2019 - 2:41 pm

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Starting next month in metro Detroit, those orange construction barrels will be coming out again -- big time.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says to especially be on the lookout for construction along I-75 in Oakland County.

"This is a stretch between north of 13 Mile up to Coolidge where the previous segment left off -- that was South Boulevard to Coolidge -- so 13 Mile to Coolidge, this is going to be the big focus in 2019," said MDOT spokesperson Rob Morosi. "It's going to be a complete rebuild with bridge replacements and we're going to do some interchange work at Big Beaver and 14 Mile. So, this year northbound I-75 will be closed from 13 Mile to Coolidge. All that northbound traffic is shifted over to the southbound side."

During this phase of the I-75 modernization project, crews will also be adding an extra lane in each direction by enclosing the median. Work on this section of the project is expected to wrap up by fall 2020.

Morosi said parts of I-94 in Wayne County will also be major construction zones this year.

"That's going to be another area that's really impacted, from Detroit moving west out toward the airport," he said. "Separate projects will either involve bridge rehabilitation, bridge replacement, resurfacing, pavement repairs, bridge repairs -- there's a lot of work on I-94 in Wayne County."

The I-94 modernization project includes roughly seven miles of I-94 between Conner Avenue and I-96 and is expected to be finished by November. Outside of improvements to 67 bridges and two major interchanges, at the Lodge Freeway and I-75, crews will also be constructing an additional lane.
