ROMULUS (WWJ) - Drivers are told to expect delays to Detroit Metro Airport, after a bridge was damaged in a crash.

Traffic around the south end of the airport was being rerouted into the evening following an accident shortly before 12 p.m.

Eastbound Eureka Road, between Wayne Road and Middlebelt Road, and the Dingell Drive ramp to eastbound Eureka were closed to traffic.

According to airport spokesperson Erica Donerson, a commercial vehicle traveling eastbound on Eureka struck the Dingell Drive overpass, causing significant damage to the bridge.

The driver sustained injuries due to falling concrete, Donerson said, and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Another person who was injured in a nearby car was treated at the scene and released.

A preliminary investigation found that the boom on the vehicle was not properly stowed at the time of impact.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, contractors with the Wayne County Airport Authority were still assessing the structural damage to the bridge.

"The roadways may be closed through the holiday weekend," Donerson said, noting that westbound Eureka Road remains open.
