Train Derails In Kalamazoo

About 15 cars overturned.

July 03, 2018 - 9:20 am

(WWJ) A train derailment in downtown Kalamazoo is causing lots of traffic problems this morning.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says about 15 cars overturned just before 7 a.m.., blocking several major intersections in the downtown , including Michigan and Kalamazoo Avenues.

The train was carrying cargo, not passengers.

"The rail line that this train derailed on is used by freight trains," said Jeff Chamberlain, Kalamazoo's deputy city manager. "So this is an area where trains back up and switch lines. It looks like it happened on a curve."

Chamberlain says they don't know what caused the derailment, but no one was injured and there has been no release of hazardous materials. There has been damage to power lines and other property.

Officials say the clean-up could impact the evening commute.
