DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are searching for a gunman on the run following an early morning double shooting near Palmer Park.

The shooting happened just before 4:30 a.m. Monday on Covington Drive, in the area of McNichols and Woodward Avenue. According to police, two people were shot -- a man and a woman, both in their 20s.

Police said the suspect jumped out of a minivan and opened fire, possibly over a disagreement.

Later in the morning, police were looking for the shooter, described as a transgender black male in his 20s. According to witnesses, the suspect has black hair and was wearing short shorts and a half-top. He was driving an older model silver minivan.

As for the victims, both were taken to a local hospital. The 21-year-old victim was shot in the leg, police said, and the 23-year-old victim -- who was shot in the stomach and left hand -- was in critical condition. Police said both were expected to survive.

No names have been released.

As an investigation continues, the public is reminded that all shooting suspects should be considered armed and dangerous. If you see the person described, do not approach, but instead call Detroit police at 313-267-4600 or dial 911.
