Troy Police: Suspected Drunk Driver Crashed After Braking For Fox

March 28, 2019 - 11:03 am

TROY (WWJ) - A Troy man has been charged with drunken driving for a fifth time, after braking for a fox in the roadway.

Troy police got a call from the area of Minnesota Dr. and Lovington Ave., early in the morning of March 21, where a resident reported being awakened by the sound of a crash.

Officers responding to the scene spotted three people walking away from a silver 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer, which had crashed into a telephone pole.

A 51-year-old man admitted he had been driving the SUV, telling police that he'd hit the brakes when a fox ran out into the street, which led to the crash.

No one in the vehicle was hurt, and it does not appear that the fox was injured.

When asked, the driver admitted he'd been drinking, police said, and then performed poorly in field sobriety tests.

Police said they then asked the man to take a breathalyzer, he refused and was arrested. At the Troy police lockup, officials say he continued to refuse to submit to the breath test.

A search warrant was obtained for a blood test, and the man was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence of Alcohol – 5th Offense, pending lab results.

Police said the man had four prior conviction for OWI; three in Michigan and one in New York.
