UAW Convention Agenda Includes Electing New President

The convention will be held at Cobo

DETROIT (WWJ) - United Auto Worker (UAW) leaders are coming to Detroit this week to elect a new president.

While the top of the agenda may be putting in place a new leader -- there are controversial issues taking center stage this year -- including the dues increase, as well as well as the corruption charges leveled against UAW members.

"What's remarkable," says WWJ Auto Analyst John McElroy, "is that Dennis Williams, the head of the UAW, came out in support of Trump's tariffs - he spoke very fondly of what the president is doing in that regard - or at least talking about doing in that regard."

They're expected to affirm the election of Gary Jones to head the union -- as the current president, Dennis Williams, is retiring after one term.

"There are even some question marks around Gary Jones," said McElroy. "There's nothing accusing him of any of the bribery that was going on at the FCA level but him being in the vicinity at a resort where this stuff was going on -- and we'll see how that plays out."

The UAW’s 37th Constitutional Convention will be held in Detroit’s Cobo Hall starting Monday.
