Update: 2 Michigan Beaches Closed Due To E. Coli, Others Reopen

June 18, 2018 - 12:12 pm

ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) - There's some good news for metro Detroit residents planning to hit the beach on a piping hot Monday afternoon.

Several Southeast Michigan beaches that had recently been closed due to unsafe levels of e. coli are open, as temperatures hang out in the 90s. This includes Chrysler Park Beach along the St. Clair River in Marysville, which was closed over the weekend -- which means all metro Detroit beaches were open for swimming as of noon on Monday.

However, those venturing out of the Detroit area should note that Whites Beach on Saginaw Bay in Arenac County, and Stratford Woods Park Beach on Kiwassee Lake in Midland County both remain closed -- with a Contamination Advisory in effect after tests by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality found high levels of bacteria.

E. coli bacteria sometimes gets into the water from improper waste connections to storm sewers, sewer overflows and storm runoff, according to officials.

Need an idea of where to go?  Lake St. Clair Metropark Beach in Harrison Township, Stony Creek Metropark Eastwood and Baypoint Beach in Shelby Township and Kensington Metropark Martindale and Maple Beach in Milford are popular spots. Get more details here
