Victim Identified, Suspect Sought In Clinton Township Fatal Hit-And-Run

July 03, 2018 - 12:15 pm

CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) - Clinton Township police have released the name of the victim as they continue to search for the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash

According to authorities, 34-year-old Joseph Canty of Clinton Township was on foot, at 12:23 a.m. Monday, trying to cross the Gratiot Ave. when he was struck by a white truck.

Police said the vehicle was traveling in the left lane of southbound Gratiot, just past Wellington Crescent and was hit by the truck on the passenger's side, breaking off the side-view mirror.

A bystander who heard the crash found the victim in the roadway, and Canty was taken to McLaren Macomb Hospital where he died of his injuries.

Rather than stopping, the truck turned around at a nearby car wash and left the scene heading northbound on Gratiot. Nearby security cameras were able to record the crash and an image of the truck.

Police have since said they have identified and located the suspect vehicle -- a white Cadillac Escalade -- although, as of Tuesday afternoon, the wanted driver remained at large.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, police said, and the suspect has not been named or described as an investigation continues.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information about the crash is asked to call Clinton Township police at 586-493-7802.
