WWJ -- Where is Karen Spranger?

That's the question Warren police want an answer to.

The former Macomb County clerk has been sought by police, for several weeks, for questioning regarding the alleged assault of a 78-year-old that Spranger was reportedly the caretaker for.

In late February Spranger allegedly had a physical altercation with the woman in the parking lot of an apartment complex where they both lived. She also allegedly yelled at, belittled and threatened the woman. The victim told police Spranger had taken $1,800 from her purse and stole her debit card.

No charges have been filed, but authorities have been attempting to locate Spranger and talk with her since the incident.

In addition to questioning her, Warren Police Chief Bill Dwyer is concerned for Spranger's welfare. Dwyer says he has had rumors that she is homeless and is living in motels.

"Does she have problems that we could help her with? As law enforcement, we have a responsibility to enforce the laws, but we also are compassionate people and I would just ask Karen if she hears this interview, come on in and let us talk to you. I think it’s the best thing in her interest," Dwyer said.

Spranger was ousted from her position as Macomb County Clerk last year after it was discovered she lied about her residency on the documents she filed to run for office. Spranger was also accused last spring of kicking an employee

According to County Chief Executive Mark Deldin, an employee at the Circuit Court building in Mt. Clemens reported that she was kicked by Spranger immediately after complaining to her supervisor about being harassed and threatened by the clerk.

“As the employee was exiting her immediate supervisor’s office, Ms. Spranger tried to barge in through the doorway,” Deldin told WWJ last March. “And as she was shutting the door, Ms. Spranger -- as if she was trying to put her foot or her leg in the doorway to avoid it being closed -- she kicked the employee in the process.”
