DETROIT (WWJ) - Drive carefully, and only if you must. Ice and snow are expected to make for trecherous travel conditions Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, across the metro Detroit area.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory now in effect through 2 a.m. Wednesday for southeast Michigan, including Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair, Livingston, Washtenaw, Lenawee and Monroe counties. Expect slick roads, limited visibilities, and use caution while driving.

The FAA said Detroit Metro Airport was expected to be closed for several hours ovenight due to the icy condtions.(More on this)

Also Tuesday night, school closings began to roll in across the area. **CHECK THE LIST**

WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist John Feerick said the system -- carrying a wintry mix  -- was moving faster than expected.

"We're gonna see pockets of sleet and freezing rain, maybe some snowflakes mixed in this evening," Feerick said, speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950. "Temperatures right now are generally  in the mid-20s, so anything that falls right now and in the next few hours is going to freeze on contact, and anything untreated is going to be slick."

Drivers should expect hazardous travel due to slippery road conditions, forecasters say, before the mix turn to plain rain shortly after midnight when temperatures should rise above freezing. There could be more of a mess, however, during the Wednesday morning commute -- so plan accordingly.

Total snow accumulations of less than one inch and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch are expected in metro Detroit.

Those headed out of the Detroit area should take note that a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 8 a.m. Wednesday in Midland, Bay, Huron, Saginaw, Tuscola and Sanilac counties. In these areas, total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches and a light glaze of ice accumulation is expected. Precipitation is expected to change to rain Wednesday morning as temperatures rise above freezing.

Here's a look at the Detroit -area forecast from the WWJ Weather Team:
