WARREN (WWJ) - A Warren man may have been dead inside his home for as long as a year while another person was still living there.

Police made the discovery Monday morning during a welfare check on 68-year-old George Curtis, whose body was in his bed.

"He obviously had been dead for quite a long period of time," Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer told WWJ's Ron Dewey. "It's pretty disturbing. We're talking several months that he was lying in that bed."

A woman had lived with Curtis's badly decomposed body without notifying authorities or leaving the house, on Burgundy Avenue near I-696 and Schoenherr Road. She was taken to an area hospital for a mental evaluation.

"It really is bizarre," said Dywer. "For someone to be living in a home for months with someone that had for whatever reason died, to live with the odor and the other factors that are involved in this, it's just quite frankly very disturbing."

The medical examiner's office is now determining how Curtis died.

"At this point we're not sure if it was a natural death, suicide or even a homicide," said Dwyer.

An investigation is ongoing.
