LANSING (WWJ/AP) - A young mid-Michigan man who pleaded guilty but mentally ill to killing his mother as she slept has been sentenced to at least 17 years in prison.

The Lansing State Journal reports 20-year-old Andrew Willson learned his punishment Wednesday in Ingham County Circuit Court after entering the plea in October to charges including second-degree murder. In exchange for the plea, a first-degree murder charge was dropped.

Willson, who was 19 year old when he shot his mom, apologized, saying he misses her "so much."

Lisa Willson, 51, was found fatally shot at their home in Ingham County's Wheatfield Township on Sept. 8, 2017. Andrew Willson told a 911 dispatcher hat he'd returned home to discover the body, but investigators determined that no one else had been in the house.

In pre-trial testimony, an Ingham County Sheriff’s detective told the jugde that, just hours before her death, Lisa Willson told her son that a puppy he’d found a few weeks earlier would have to go to his father’s home in Dansville

The teen allegedly told detectives that he waited until late that night before taking a .22 Magnum rifle from a locked cabinet. He then went into his mother’s room and shot her in the back of the head as she slept.

Andrew Willson’s lawyer has said that at the time of the shooting Willson was in the midst of a major depressive episode and had been hearing voices ordering him to kill her. The attorney also suggested that  high doses of chemotherapy years ago may have affected his client’s judgment.
